Biography
Jakko Forsman was born into the family of the vicar George Jacob and Anna Loviza Forsman.
In 1857 he graduated from high school. He completed a training course at the Imperial Alexander University (1857-1864). He received his doctorate (1868), for the first time defending a dissertation in Finnish. Trained abroad in Berlin, Dresden and Leipzig (1878-1879).
He worked as a professor of law and legal history at the Imperial Alexander University (1879-1899). He served as vice-rector of the university in (1892-1899). Rector of the University (1896-1899).
His contribution to the Finnish Penal Code and lectures on criminal law, which came to be seen as a true interpretation of the code, earned the title “Father of Finnish Criminal Law”. Forsman wrote a major work on Finnish legal history (1896). He served in the Sejm of Finland from 1882 until his death. He was a member of the Helsinki City Council (1889-1891). Received the title of State Councilor (1898).
