History
The first epigraphic monuments were found in Chersonesos in the 18th century. In 1793 , Theagene and his wife Ulpii were found, and in 1794 , the pedestal of the statue of Agasicles was found. In the middle of the XIX century , a considerable collection of Chersonese epigraphies had already been gathered. Inscriptions were found not only by chance, but also during large-scale archaeological excavations. Especially a lot of inscriptions were found during the archaeological searches of the Imperial Archaeological Commission, which were held in Chersonesos every year from 1888 to 1915 .
Karl Kazimirovich Kostsyushko-Valyuzhinich , who led the archaeological excavations, eventually created a museum with a separate lapidary , where the inscriptions found on the stone from ancient times to the Middle Ages were exhibited.
In 1957, the lapidary room was restored and equipped. The creation of lapidary was carried out by the museum staff and scientists of the department of ancient aerology and medieval archeology of the Institute of Archeology of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences . The work on the arrangement of lapidary was headed by Professor Ella Isaakovna Solomonik with the participation of the head of the museum’s funds. M. Gilevich and students of classical departments of the then Leningrad and Lviv universities .
The most ancient epigraphic monuments of Chersonesus were created in the IV — III centuries. BC The largest and most diverse collection in the museum-reserve is made up of monuments from the Hellenistic period. Inscriptions of the Roman period and the period of the Middle Ages are a small section of Lapidary.
