Muhammad VIII al-Amin (1881–1962), the last bay of Tunisia (1943–1956), the first king of Tunisia (1956–1957), head of the Husseinid dynasty (1957–1962)
The Kingdom of Tunisia was abolished in 1957 . The Husseinid dynasty , which ruled in Tunisia from 1705 to 1957 , used the Ottoman practice of ladder law , as a result of which the senior member of the dynasty was the heir to the throne. In 1705-1956 , the rulers of Tunisia held the title of Bey , and in 1956 the last Bey, Muhammad VIII al-Amin (1943-1956), took the royal title. In 1957, the Tunisian monarchy was abolished and replaced by the republic, but the Husseinid dynasty continues to use the ladder order of inheritance.
