Biography
Born on August 29, 1911 in Bachalmash (now southern Hungary). Parents are Jews Ferdinand Sende and Zelma Sende (nee Kraus) who moved to Yugoslavia after the First World War. She graduated from a primary school in Apatina and several classes of a gymnasium, received a secondary education in Sombor. In 1932 she entered the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Zagreb, in 1934 she was transferred to the University of Belgrade. Consisted in a revolutionary movement, since 1937 - member of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia. Married to Vladeto Popovic, a medical student at the University of Belgrade.
At the end of November 1937, Cornelia left for Spain, where she helped the Second Spanish Republic during the Civil War. After the collapse of the republic, she was in the concentration camp of Saint-Zahar in France, for health reasons she was released and sent to Yugoslavia, where she was again arrested for a month. After her release, she continued party activities, in 1940 she was again thrown into prison twice (in January and July), released in December.
In early 1941, Cornelia was again arrested, released only on March 27 after a military coup, and left for Apatine. After the occupation of Yugoslavia, she joined the partisan underground, was the secretary of the party cell in Belgrade. In mid-August 1941, she was arrested by the police of Nedichevsk Serbia and thrown into the Banica concentration camp . On September 19, 1941, she was shot along with 19 women from the partisan underground (among the executed were Mariyana Gregoran , Rashela Baruch-Simich , Jovanka Radakovich and others). She was reburied after the war on the Alley of Shot Patriots of 1941-1944 in Belgrade's New Cemetery .
