Biography
He graduated from the Basic Men's School of the National Central Men's Institute, where he received a teacher’s diploma. In 1897, Mr .. - Law College of Law of the National University , after which he began to practice law. After tackling a case that irritated President Jose Rein Barrios , he was imprisoned for two months. After his release, he worked with opposition candidates - mainly with Jose Leon Castillo. After the assassination of Reina Barrios in 1898, he returned to legal practice, however, after he advocated for his brother Abraham in a case against one of the close associates of President Manuel Estrada Cabrera in 1906, he was forced to leave the country.
He settled in San Pedro Sud (Honduras), where he lived for fourteen years, returning to Guatemala after the events that led to the removal of President Estrada Cabrera in April 1920. Chosen González, who was elected president of the state in 1926, was his personal friend and in 1928 he appointed him in his administration to the post of Minister of Finance. He was also appointed second vice-president of Guatemala, after Chacon González suffered a severe stroke, he was appointed the acting head of state by agreement of the remaining cabinet members.
On December 13, 1930, the resignation of Chacon was accepted by parliament and the powers of his successor were confirmed. On December 16, 1930, President of the United States Herbert Hoover recognized his presidency in a congratulatory telegram. But the very next day, the commander of the garrison of San Rafael de Matamoros, General Manuel Contreras Orellana , intoxicated, accompanied by several soldiers, burst into the president’s residence and forced him to write a letter of resignation. According to the main version of the development of further events, he was then killed by the rebels. On December 31, 1930, the Parliament of Guatemala formally accepted the resignation of Palma as head of state.
Some authors suggest that he would not have been killed, but managed to escape in El Salvador, where he supposedly died on June 19, 1944.
