For the first time, entitled “At World's End. Christmas Story ”was published in the newspaper Citizen, 1875, December 28, and 1876, January 5, 12, 18, 25, and February 8.
The prototype of the protagonist was the archbishop of Yaroslavl and Rostov Nile . In the story "The Sovereign Court" Leskov writes:
| I see no more need to hide that the bishop, from whose memoirs this story is composed, is none other than the recently deceased Archbishop of Yaroslavl, His Eminence Neil, who himself told this incident to him, now respected and residing here in St. Petersburg, and of all trust worthy person V.
