Formation History
The 65th Guards Artillery Regiment was formed on August 5, 1942 as part of the 35th Guards Rifle Division , from the previously created 553rd Artillery Regiment [1] [2] . The regiment was formed according to state No. 4/302 of July 28, 1942: two 3 battery battalions each: eight 76-mm guns and four 122 mm howitzers and one 2-battery battalion: four 76 mm guns and four 122 -mm howitzers, fully mechanized (34 STZ tractors), with a staff of 991 people. During the manning, the regiment received only twenty vehicles requiring major repairs, so there was an acute shortage of transport in the regiment for the transport of ammunition, fuel and food.
Participation in hostilities
Period of entry into the army: August 11, 1942 - February 1943, March 1, 1943 - May 9, 1945 [3] .
On August 5, 1942, by combat order No. 0041 / OP of the artillery headquarters of the Stalingrad Front, the 65th regiment (35th division) [4] was sent from Orlovka to the command of the 64th army , for use on the operations site of the 15th Guards Rifle Division . On August 6, 1942, the regiment, together with the 64th Army, was transferred to the Southeast Front . Since August 8, a regiment in the 57th Army , as a means of strengthening the 15th Division, has been located in the area of the MTF state farm, three and a half kilometers from the village of Dubovy Ovrag, Krasnoarmeysky District, Stalingrad Region .
On August 17, 1942, the 65th regiment was included in the 36th Guards Rifle Division as its division artillery regiment, but was left in the same area of deployment - to support the 15th Guards Rifle Division and the Vinnytsia Infantry School, and later the 76th Fortified Area .
On August 19 and 20, 1942, supporting the 15th division (2nd and 3rd divisions) and the Vinnytsia infantry school (1st division), when the Germans attempted to break through our defenses with the aim of reaching the city of Krasnoarmeysk - Beketovka , at the turn : Tingutinskoye lesnichestvo, Volga state farm, heights of 87.0 and 87.6 regiment fell into the triple environment of three hundred enemy tanks. Two regiment divisions with their fire broke through the encirclement ring, helped the infantry to get out of it, destroying 36 and knocking out 7 tanks and 96 vehicles with infantry, while losing 7 guns with tractors and 10% of the personnel.
On August 29, 1942, the 1st and 2nd divisions of the regiment go to the concentration area of the 36th Division [5] , the 3rd Division continues to support the 15th Division during September - October 1942.
On January 10, 1943, when an enemy defensive line breaks in the area: Karavatka beam, heights 105.3, 111.6, a regiment of fire of 23 guns direct fire suppresses and destroys the enemy firing points, accompanies the advancing infantry with fire and wheels and goes south with battle -western outskirts of the city of Stalingrad . In total, during the battles near Stalingrad, the regiment was destroyed by fire: 86 tanks, 19 killed, 1 Focke-Wulf type aircraft shot down, 43 guns destroyed, 23 guns destroyed, 22 mortars destroyed, 19 machine guns destroyed, 339, crushed - 114. Crashed cars - 74, crashed - 41. Crashed dugouts and bunkers - 123, destroyed soldiers and officers - 8641 people, crushed artillery batteries - 15.
After the end of hostilities near Stalingrad, the regiment as part of the 36th division is sent to the disposal of the Voronezh Front in the area of the city of Volchansk , where from April 16, 1943 it has been in defensive battles along the Seversky Donets River . On July 5, 1943, when the enemy went on the offensive in the area of the Nezhegol - Seversky Donets river junction ( Bezlyudovka village), a regiment with a fire of 35 guns repulsed all enemy counterattacks and went on the offensive, supporting the advancing infantry with fire and wheels. During the battles from April 16 to August 9, 1943, the regiment’s fire destroyed: 9 guns, 9 mortars, 62 machine guns, 23 vehicles, 8 dugouts, 5 observation posts, 3 ammunition depots and up to 1220 enemy soldiers and officers.
Continuing to pursue the retreating enemy regiment with his fire, breaking his resistance on the way, in battles he goes to the area of the city of Kharkov , where from August 19 to 22 he takes active steps to master the Kharkov Tractor Plant and direct fire guns suppresses and destroys enemy fire points and manpower .
Moving further west towards the city of Merefa , the regiment encounters strong resistance from the enemy from the right bank of the Mzha river and a height of 208.4 where all the guns of the regiment are put up for direct fire and, breaking the enemy’s resistance, goes to the line of Borki station. Having mastered the station gives the infantry the opportunity to develop a further offensive and go to the area of Taranovka village. In this area, the enemy, the enemy entrenched at heights favorable to him and temporarily suspends the progress of our troops. For 2 days, on September 12 and 13, the regiment suppresses and destroys enemy firepower and manpower, knocks it off its occupied line, and continues to support the advancing infantry with fire and wheels.
On September 25, 1943, the regiment with its fire provides the units of the 36th Division with access to the left bank of the Dnieper River , where on the night of September 26 it helps to force the river, occupy the village of Soshinovka and a height of 134.4 on the right bank of the river. The personnel of the regiment on their hands sends three 76-mm divisional guns to infantry combat formations and helps to repel the counterattacks of the infantry and tanks of the enemy. During the offensive battles from August 9 to September 30, the regiment’s fire destroyed: tanks - 1, guns - 5, self - propelled guns - 1, machine guns - 31, warehouses with ammunition - 1, observation posts - 2, soldiers and officers - 1865 people. Suppressed: machine guns - 67, guns - 3, self - propelled guns - 9, six-barreled mortars - 3, mortar batteries - 3.
Having provided a bridgehead on the right bank of the Dnieper River, the regiment as part of the 36th Division breaks through the enemy’s defenses and on October 22 takes control of a number of large settlements, the city and the Verkhnedneprovsk railway station. Chasing the retreating enemy, the regiment on October 28 reached the eastern bank of the Ingulets River, where it met strong resistance to the enemy’s fire, which was broken only on November 10, 1943. The regiment as part of the 36th division moves forward and crosses the Ingul River from the start .
Continuing to support parts of the 36th division, the regiment reached the eastern bank of the Southern Bug River on March 23, 1944, and from March 24 to March 28 in the vicinity of the village of Migiya forcedly crosses it. After that, the regiment, in difficult metrological conditions, makes 200 km of march with few passable roads, and on April 10, crosses the Dniester River in the vicinity of the Tsaren village ( Bessarabia ). Continuing to march on the night of April 16-17, 1944, a regiment in the vicinity of the village of Skuleni crosses the Prut River and enters Romania .
On April 20, 1944, the regiment successfully completed the completion of the 600 km march and from April 23 to 24 it took military order in the vicinity of the villages of Stroeshchiy and Vaskaniy. At this line, the enemy, relying on pre-prepared defense lines, has strong fire resistance. On August 21, a regiment of the 36th division breaks through the enemy’s defenses at the turn: heights 172, 192, the village of Syrka and pursues the retreating enemy by August 30, goes to the border of Northern Transylvania . At this line, the enemy, using natural and previously prepared defense lines, tried to counterattack the units of the 36th division with frequent counterattacks and prevent them from crossing the Eastern Carpathians pass. The regiment bypassed maneuver in difficult meteorological conditions and mountainous and wooded areas pulled out six guns on high. 1011, which ensured the capture from the flank, September 8, 1944, of the city of Brecku.
Pursuing the retreating enemy in a southwestern direction, on September 28, the regiment reached the eastern bank of the Mureshul River near the city of Tirgu Mures . On the night of September 28-29, a regiment consisting of 9 guns wade 1.5 meters deep and crosses the Mureshul River and ensures that units of the 36th Division take a favorable line on the west bank of the river — height 466.
From October 9 to October 22, 1944, the regiment made a 600 km march and on October 23 took military order in the area of the city of Pytri ( Hungary ). Conducting offensive battles in the 36th Division on October 24, the regiment reached the eastern bank of the Tisza River and forced it on the night of October 24 to 25.
The regiment finished the Patriotic War on August 11, 1945 in the Austrian Alps northeast of the Austrian city of Brook.
