The plot of the story was proposed to A.P. Chekhov by Viktor Bilibin , who wrote in his letter on March 14, 1886: “I will occasionally give you topics for articles ...” (GBL). In a letter dated March 14, 1886, he recommended one of the promised topics: “Psychology of a small child (2-3 3-4 years old). Fedya? (narrator). ”
The story was first published on April 18, 1886 in the fourteenth issue of the pieces of humorous literary and artistic weekly magazine . In a slightly modified version, the story was included by Chekhov in the first volume of his collected works, published in 1899-1901 by Adolf Marx [1] .
During the life of Chekhov, the story was translated into Hungarian, German, Serbo-Croatian and Czech.
Story
Grisha’s boy, two years and eight months old, takes his first steps into the world around him in the company of his slightly wayward nanny, receives from her even the first sip of alcohol. In the evening, Grisha tells his mother where he was and what he saw. He has minor health problems that his mother treats with castor oil .
The prototype of the boy Grisha was the adopted son of the writer N. A. Leikin Fedya, tossed in 1884 and adopted by him in June 1886. Leikin wrote several times to Chekhov about the life of a boy. Chekhov was at Leikin in 1885 and more than once recalled the boy.
