Etymology
The name comes from the toponym Narao, the name of a group of small lakes in the canyon Cataract Brook (English) , next to the Canadian Pacific Railway, British Columbia ( Canada ) [1] .
Study History
Representatives of the genus were first described from the well-known location of the Burgess shales in Canada. Initially, Naraoia were described as crustaceans . Their dense carapace hid the internal structures necessary for a more accurate classification. Later, the famous paleontologist , who analyzed more material, found that the legs (and gills) of Naraoia are very morphologically similar to the trilobites , to which they belonged [2] .
Description
They are characterized by a small body size (2-4.5 cm).
Classification
The genus includes 5 extinct species :
- Naraoia bertiensis Caron, Rudjin & Millken 2004
- Naraoia compacta Walcott, 1912
- Naraoia spinifer Walcott, 1931
- Naraoia spinosa Zhang & Hou, 1985
- Naraoia tianjiangensis Peng, Zhou & Sun 2012
