Biography

In 1936 - the only first-grader student in Moscow [1] . In the same year, he performed for the first time in the final of the Moscow Championship (he shared 12-13 places with O. Bogatyrev; he defeated masters V. N. Panov , N. D. Grigoryev and first-class player F. L. Fogelevich in personal meetings). In 1938, he won one of the groups of the semifinal of the Moscow championship with a score of 11 out of 13 points. For this result, Yeltsov was awarded the title of candidate master. [2] In the final of the Moscow Championship in 1938, he shared 4-7 places with his peer B. Waxberg and masters V. N. Panov and M. M. Yudovich . Defeated the winner of the tournament master S.V. Belavents .

If for Panov and Yudovich the division of 4th and 7th places cannot be considered a great achievement, then for young candidates Vaksberg and Yeltsov is a great success and an indicator of their undoubted progress. Vaksberg and Yeltsov, identical in age, in terms of receiving the candidate title, are at the same time chess players of completely different styles and directions. <...>

Yeltsov’s game makes a much more valuable impression. Moreover, a strategic understanding of the position he successfully combines with outstanding tactical talent. His game now gives the impression of great maturity. Following Smyslov, Yeltsov achieved an excellent score against the masters - 4 out of 6. There is no doubt that in the near future the Moscow chess and drafts organization in his person will receive a full-fledged master.

In the Moscow championship of 1941, he shares 4-5 places, ahead of masters V. A. Alatortsev , I. A. Kan and M. M. Yudovich. In those years, he regularly won against masters. His victories over I. A. Kan, M. M. Yudovich, and A. D. Zamikhovsky are known . In the unfinished semifinal of the 13th USSR Championship, Black defeated the Leningrad master I. L. Rabinovich (the text of the game was lost). He defeated Grandmaster A. A. Kotov twice (in 1940 and 1941).

The game against M. M. Yudovich from the Moscow championship in 1941, in which Yeltsov used a rare Latvian gambit , was included in theoretical directories. [3]

He devoted all his free time to chess. Yeltsov worked as a chess trainer, analyzed a lot, wrote chess articles. He knew the story very well, his game was distinguished by a subtle understanding of position and rare tactical acuity.

Yeltsov had a keen understanding of the position and sharp tactical vision, and although he did not formally have the title of master, he was not much inferior to the leading Moscow chess players in the strength of the game.

Alexander Yeltsov went missing in October 1941 in the battles of Moscow [4] [5] .
