History
The fortress has been functioning for a long time and has two historical periods of its use - Byzantine and Genoese. According to Yu. N. Voronov , these periods date back to the V — VIII and XIV — XV centuries, according to the head of the Loo archaeological expedition, which carried out clearing and measurement of the object in 1992-1993, B. B. Ovchinnikova - VII — X and XIV— XV centuries. During the construction, the masonry tradition, characteristic of the Roman-Byzantine era, was used - two-shell with an internal backing.
Fragments of ceramics, including “Khazar” dishes, were found on the territory of the fortress.
In the Genoese period, an additional wall was completed with the technique of Italian fortifications - "In the Christmas tree".
In modern times, the fortress and valley of the Godlik River became known for the battle of the Russian troops with the Ubykhs in 1864 .
