The son of Gaston de Foix, Captal de Bouche (1400-1456) and Margarita d'Albray, daughter of Arno Amagnieux, Senor d'Albray .
Like his father, he was in the English service. In 1446 he was awarded the Order of the Garter and received the title of Count Kendel.
In 1451, Gaston de Foix, Jean's father, sold all his possessions in parts. And after his death (1456), his son did not get anything from them.
At the Battle of Castiglione on July 17, 1453, Jean de Foix was captured by the French. By order of King Charles VII, he was held in the castle of Tailburg under the supervision of Olivier de Cotivi, Seneschal Guyenne. He was released on January 18, 1460, promising to pay Olivier a ransom of 23,850 ecu, of which 5,850 actually paid.
He left for England, and was captured at the Battle of Northampton (July 10 of that year). He was transferred to Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick , and returned with him to France.
In 1461, the new king Louis XI forced Olivier de Cotivi to write off a debt of 18 thousand ecu. After that, Jean de Foix was able to redeem the former possessions of his father - the Captalat de Bouche, the county of Benoges and the Viscountry of Castiglion. After that, he entered the French service and refused the Order of the Garter, but retained the title of Count Kendal (Chandal), which his descendants used until 1714.
