Prerequisites
The Iranian government has been fighting the Islamic State (IS) for three years. IG, whose doctrine is based on the support of the Wahhabi segment of Sunni Islam , considers Shiite Muslims , the largest Muslim group in Iran, as apostates and enemies of Islam [8] . However, the IG has not yet undertaken any attacks in Iran, despite repeated threats to the people of the country. A few months before the attack, the IG intensified propaganda efforts in Persian to influence the Sunni minority of Iran [9] .
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani emphasized the great rights of minorities, including the Iranian Sunnis, and made efforts to draw attention to his successful re-election campaign. However, in areas such as the southeastern provinces of Sistan and Baluchistan , there were constant conflicts with Sunni extremist groups. On June 8, 2017, Iranian intelligence minister noted that over the past two previous years, the government had prevented "a hundred terrorist plots".
On May 3, 2017, the Deputy King of Saudi Arabia, Muhammad ibn Salman Al Saud, accused Iran of trying to take control of Mecca and threatened actions. Salman said: "We will not wait for the battle in Saudi Arabia; instead, we will work so that the battle will be for them in Iran, and not in Saudi Arabia."

Parliament
In the morning, four armed militants [3] disguised as women broke into the parliamentary complex during the parliamentary session [10] . They killed a guard and several other people, and also, according to media reports, took hostages; however, the Iranian government denies this [9] . Iranian state television reported that one of the attackers blew himself up in the parliament building, while the parliament was in session, and according to some other news agencies, the explosion could have happened because of a grenade thrown by the attackers [11] . According to the conclusion of Hussein Zolfgari, the Deputy Minister of the Interior of Iran, several militants were armed with AK-47 assault rifles [9] . The building was subsequently surrounded by security forces. Later, the Iranian government announced that all militants had been eliminated.
Khomeini Mausoleum
Simultaneously with the attack on the parliament, another group of terrorists attacked the mausoleum of Khomeini . One of the terrorists blew himself up before entering the police station, one militant was eliminated, the other committed suicide [12] . CIPIRI conducted a counter -terrorist operation in the area of the mausoleum; according to their information, the terrorists who were trying to enter the temple were shot by police snipers [13] .
Reaction
June 18, 2017 from the bases of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps ( IRGC ) in the provinces of Kermanshah and Kurdistan a medium-range ballistic missile launched a missile attack on terrorist bases located in eastern Syria (near the town of Deir ez-Zor ). The Fars report stresses that the missile attack is a response to a series of terrorist attacks in Tehran in early June. [14]
