Biography
Andrzej’s parents, Maria and Felix Bursa, divorced after the Second World War on the basis of ideological differences. Father was a convinced communist, mother adhered to Catholic traditions. Being a staunch anti-Marxist, Andrzej constantly clashed with his father [2] .
Since 1945 he studied at one of the Cracow lyceums. Later he entered the Jagiellonian University , where he was going to get the profession of a journalist, but three months later he transferred to the Faculty of Philology with a specialization in Bulgarian. Three years later, he dropped out of school because of the difficult financial situation.
In 1952, he married Louis Shemet, then a student at the Krakow Academy of Arts. From this marriage he had a son, Mikhail.
From 1954 to 1957 worked as a Krakow reporter for the newspaper Dziennik Polski. His texts were recognized beyond recognition by the censors. He himself did not hide the fact that he works there solely for the sake of money. For the same material reasons, he joined the Polish United Workers Party , but very soon left its ranks. He also broke with his mother’s heritage, the Catholic Church , having deleted his name from church parish books.
Shortly before his death, he left the newspaper in protest against censorship, after his collection of poems was not published. The book was published only in 1958 after the death of the author [3] .
Died November 15, 1957 from congenital heart disease. For many years it was believed that he committed suicide.
Creativity
Bursa's poetry was rebellious and straightforward. He openly described the vices of the society of his time, including his own. Bursa’s creative career lasted only three years, but this was enough to survive his contribution to Polish poetry for many decades.
In addition to poetry, Bursa wrote the play “Carbuncle” (co-authored with Jan Güntner ) and the fantastic story “Dragon”.
