Since 1981, the heptathlon has come to replace the pentathlon in women's competitions. The European Cup was the first official international tournament where this innovation was tested.

Each team was represented by four athletes. In total, 52 all-rounders (28 men and 24 women) from 8 countries took to the start. The best teams in the team standings were determined by the sum of the results of the three best participants.
