History

The Exploited was formed in 1979 in Edinburgh , Scotland . The Exploited's first studio recordings were orthodox punk rock, and by the mid-80s the band's style was increasingly transforming towards hardcore . Albums released since 1987 sound very hard, close enough to thrash metal .

The title of The Exploited's first album, “Punk's Not Dead”, released in 1981 , has become one of the most famous slogans of the punk movement. This slogan appeared in spite of the group Crass , who released the single “Punk is Dead” in 1979, in which they denounced the essence of the new punk subculture that became commercial, in their opinion (which killed her). It is noted that Crass had a considerable musical influence on the debut album of the Scots [1] . The 1982 Exploited second album, “Troops of Tomorrow,” features the song “Sid Vicious Was Innocent” ( Sid Vicious was innocent ) - a reference to the history of the previous British punk rock band No. 1. The album ended up in 20th place on the UK national charts. and the group immediately stood on a par with the most famous heroes of the British punk scene of that time - Charged GBH , Anti-Nowhere League and Discharge . "Punk's Not Dead" was sold in the amount of 150 thousand copies and received a 5-star review from the main engine of punk rock journalist Garry Bushell from Sounds (who was also the inventor of the term Oi! ). Another significant event happened in October 1981, when the single “Dead Cities” (with the songs “Hitler Is In The Charts Again” and “Class War”) climbed to 31st place in Britain and became the band's most successful single. After The Exploited was invited to the popular and, quite poppy, British television program Top Of The Pops . The group performed the song “Dead Cities” and shocked the audience with its behavior and frantic appearance. Fans of the team did not understand the humor of the situation and were very indignant. Even Harry Bushell accused The Exploited of corruption and released an article titled “Punk Is Dead”. Soon, the single "Dead Cities" entered the top 30 of the UK and sold 150 thousand copies and stood on the same level with famous pop groups. But, having received phenomenal fame, The Exploited still remained faithful to punk traditions, destroying hotels and arranging orgies in them during tours and often getting into local police departments in an insane state.

The second Troops Of Tomorrow album confirmed that the bulk of the fans remained loyal to them. The album hit 17th place on the charts. Two drummers took part in his recording - Steve Roberts and, and Danny. Shortly after the release of the single “Computers Don't Blunder,” the band left John Duncan (Big John), who founded his own band Blood Uncles , and later left Goodbye Mr. McKenzie . In place of guitarist Duncan was taken Billy. But Big John managed to take part in the recording of the third album, “Let's Start A War”. At this time, the first drummer of The Exploited Drew Styx experienced a difficult fate - after a long and unsuccessful fight against drug addiction, he was sentenced to 7 years in prison for armed robbery.

By the time the Horror Epics album was released in 1985, the entire band, except for the vocalist, had been radically changed. The band's new guitarist was Carl, drummer / guitarist Willy Buchan (Wattie's brother) and bass player Wayne, who was soon replaced by Depford John, and later the new guitarist Captain Scarlett appeared in The Exploited. After leaving the band, Gary McCormick formed his band Zulu Syndicate .

The band’s fifth album, Death Before Dishonour, released in 1987 , represented a departure from the band’s relatively “pure” forms of punk rock to a mixture of genres, which was even more pronounced in the 1990 album , The Massacre, in which hardcore and thrash metal often dominated punk rock.

However, all The Exploited albums have common features that are common to both early and late albums. Buchan’s constant “hoarse” vocals. The rebellious, anarchist and anti-war spirit of the lyrics, the leitmotif of which is the punk idea of opposing the establishment, expressed in attacks on the government, religion, and the power institutions of society.

Since the early 1990s, The Exploited music has become increasingly dense melodic and heavy in sound. Around the same time, the tradition of the so-called. "California punk rock" - quite light and dynamic music with a strong influence of pop punk, the most famous expression of which was The Offspring . Accordingly, The Exploited's fame is becoming increasingly niche - which is reflected in the constant increase in the intervals between studio album releases: in the early 80s, the group released a new album every year, by the end of the decade - about once every two years, and the interval between the album “ Fuck The System ”(2003) and the previous“ Beat The Bastards ”(1996) was 7 years old. The producer of The Massacre and Beat The Bastards was Colin Richardson, known for collaborating with Napalm Death and Carcass . According to vocalist Wattie Buchan, the budget for the Beat The Bastards was 40 thousand pounds instead of the planned 20 thousand, that is, it was doubled! It is not difficult to imagine how much the budget of the album “Fuck The System” was exceeded, which took about 2 times more time to record than the previous one and had to pay immediately to two producers, who were Russ Russell (who worked with Napalm Death and Lock Up ) and Simon Efemi ( Pantera , Paradise Lost and Napalm Death ).

At the same time, most observers agree that the advantage of the group is the high level of all studio albums, the absence of clearly passable things. The band abandoned the practice of releasing singles common to all commercially-oriented music back in 1982 . The technically high level of sound recording has become unchanged in recent albums - in contrast to the occasionally recorded (in punk traditions) early material, which is noticeable, for example, from the 1985 Horror Epics album .
