Eugene Telemachus “Gene” Rossides ; born 23 Oct. 1927 , Brooklyn , New York , USA ] , lawyer , politician and public figure , lobbyist and writer . Member of the Republican Party [3] . The first American Greek , approved by the US Senate to the position appointed by the US President . Assistant Deputy ( 1958 - 1961 ) and Assistant ( 1969 - 1973 ) US Treasury Secretary [4] . During his career with three US presidents, he participated in many election campaigns . Founder, former president and board member of the American-Greek Institute (AHI) [5] [6] [7] , as well as a member of the American-Greek Progressive Education Union (AHEPA) [8] [9] and the American Bar Association . Winner of the Humanitarian Award of Archbishop Jacob from AHEPA [9] , Honorary Medal of Ellis Island ( 2000 ) [10] and Commander of the Order of the Phoenix ( Greece , 2004 ) [7] [11] . One of the most active representatives of the Greek diaspora , including one of the founders of the modern Greek lobby of the USA [12] [13] [14] [15] . So, after the Turkish military invasion of Cyprus in 1974 and the subsequent occupation of the northern territory of the island , Rossidis was the organizer and leader of the successful struggle in the U.S. Congress to impose an arms embargo on Turkey (along with John Bradimas and others). For success in various fields of activity he received the nickname "Golden Greek" ( English Golden Greek ) [4] [16] .

Biography
Born on October 23, 1927 in Brooklyn ( New York , USA ) in the family of the Greeks Thielemachos Rossidis and Anna Maravelias [3] . Eugenios's father immigrated to the United States from the city of Kyrenia ( Cyprus ) in 1920, and was the first doctor of Greek descent in Brooklyn. Mother immigrated to the United States from the Mani Peninsula ( Peloponnese , Greece ) in 1910 [15] .
As a high school student, he was a quarterback on the Dutchmen football team. Gained fame by participating in the NFL Championship. He left the sport, enrolling at Columbia University , where he was also a quarterback in the Lions team (1945-1948) [1] .
He received bachelor's degrees in humanities from Columbia College (1949) and a doctorate in law from Columbia School of Law (1952) [3] [17] [9] . After graduation, he worked in the Office of the Federal Attorney for the Southern District of New York [15] .
In 1952 he became a member of the law firm Rogers & Wells (today Clifford Chance ) [3] , which was headed by former US Attorney General and future US Secretary of State William P. Rogers , as well as corporate lawyer John A. Wells.
In 1952-1953 he served in the US Air Force Logistics Command with the rank of officer of the military legal service ( military lawyer ) [9] .
In 1954-1956 - a member of Rogers & Wells.
In 1956-1958 - an employee of the Office of the Attorney General of New York [15] .
In 1958-1961, he was an assistant to the US Under Secretary of the Treasury [9] .
In 1961-1969 he was a member (1961-1966) and a partner (1966-1969) in Rogers & Wells.
In 1968, he led the presidential campaign of Richard Nixon in New York [13] .
In 1969-1973 - Assistant Secretary of the Treasury. During this period, among other things, he supervised several US federal agencies , including the Secret Service and the ATF , and also served as vice president of Interpol [17] .
In 1973–2000 - partner (1973–1992) and senior lawyer (1992–2000) at Rogers & Wells (in 1999 merged with transnational law firm Clifford Chance ) [3] .
In 1974, after the Turkish military invasion of Cyprus , he established the American-Greek Institute (AHI) in order to draw the attention of the American public to this situation and lobby the US Congress against this fait accompli [9] [16] .
In 1975, he established the AHI Foundation (AHIF) [17] .
In 1976-1979 - the publisher of the Greek version of the newspaper " The National Herald " [18] .
In 1979-1980 he took part in the presidential campaign of Ronald Reagan .
In 1982-1984, he was a member of the Presidential Cost Assessment Committee in the federal government, better known as the Grace Commission [9] .
He is a co-founder of the Eisenhower Institute [17] .
