Mikhail Osipovich Ashkinazi ( April 4, 1851 , Odessa - March 1914 , Nice , France ) [2] - Russian and French writer, translator, popularizer of Russian literature and classical music in Western Europe.

Biography
Born April 4, 1851 in Odessa. After graduating from one of the Odessa gymnasiums, he entered the Medical-Surgical Academy, from where he transferred to Kiev University , was a student at Novorossiysk University, but never received a higher education. In his youth, he led revolutionary propaganda among Odessa workers. For two years, he headed the Odessa Trude vocational school, created a farm in the Crimea, where he taught Jews agriculture [3] .
In 1877 he went abroad [4] , since 1887 he lived in Paris , where he devoted himself to familiarizing the West European public with Russian literature [5] . In the French editions published under the pseudonym Michel Delignes (Michel Delines) and under his own name. He translated into French L. Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Saltykov-Shchedrin, Goncharov, Garshin, Lazhechnikov and others, wrote critical articles about Russian writers. Some of these articles were included in his published articles in Paris in 1887–88. the books La Terre dans le roman russe; “La France, jugée par la Russie”; L'Allemagne, jugèe par la Russie; "Nos amis les Russes" and "Tourguéneff inconnu". He is the author of several works of art, including the novel from the life of Russian revolutionary youth Les victimes du tzar (1881). In the 1880s, he was also published in Russian publications (Delo, Novorossiysk Telegraph , and Nedelya), the author of several articles on Jewish life.
He also propagandized the work of Russian composers in France (in particular, having received the clavier of Taneyev’s opera Oresteia, introduced French composers to it [6] ), was one of Tchaikovsky’s Paris friends (he met him in 1888) and made a lot of efforts for the appearance of operas of this composer on the French stage [7] , translated the libretto of many Russian operas into French, including the operas of Tchaikovsky (Eugene Onegin, The Queen of Spades), Rimsky-Korsakov (Sadko). According to A. V. Lunacharsky, the translation of the libretto by Mussorgsky’s opera “Boris Godunov” “can be recognized as masterly” [8] . During Rimsky-Korsakov's stay in Paris in 1889, he became acquainted with him, according to the composer himself, “he was a nice person, caring for us, helped a lot” [9] .
At the end of his life he moved from Paris to Rome, died in Nice in March 1914.
