Military Service

During the Second World War, he was called up for military service and subsequently sent to Western Europe . In August 1944, after the completion of Operation Overlord, he arrived in France as the commander of a platoon of company C, the 302nd Infantry Regiment of the 94th Infantry Division of the US Army . As part of the unit, Oreshko participated in the liquidation of the surrounded Wehrmacht groups formed as a result of the rapid advance of the Allied forces in northern France. In December, Oreshko’s division conducted military operations in the area of ​​the breakthrough of German troops in the Ardennes [4] .

On January 23, 1945, near the town of Tettingen , the Third Reich , acting independently, attacked and disabled the German bunker. Subsequently, despite a serious wound, he attacked and destroyed another long-term firing point. For this feat, after 9 months, on October 30, 1945, he was awarded the Medal of Honor . The official presentation of the highest military award was carried out personally by US President Harry Truman during a ceremony in the White House [3] .
