The order of succession to the Baden throne

Coat of arms of the Grand Duchy of Baden

The Grand Duchy of Baden was abolished at the end of 1918 along with the rest of the monarchies that were part of the German Empire . The last great duke of Baden, Frederick II (1857-1928), who ruled from 1907 to 1918 , abdicated the duke's throne in Karlsruhe on November 22, 1918 [1] . Currently (since 1963 ) the head of the ducal house is Maximilian, Margrave of Baden and the Duke of Tseringensky (born 1933 ).

History

At the end of the 18th century, the Baden Ducal House was on the verge of extinction. By 1817, the Grand Duke Karl (1786-1818) and his unmarried uncle, Prince Ludwig (1763-1830) were male representatives of the dynasty. In the event of the extinction of the male line of the dynasty, the Baden ducal throne was to pass to the Bavarian king Maximilian I. The only alternative for the Grand Duke Karl of Baden was the recognition of his uncles, Counts von Hochberg, Leopold (1790–1852), Wilhelm (1792–1859) and Maximilian (1796–1882), born in an morganatic marriage, as full members of the ducal dynasty. On October 4, 1817, the Grand Duke Karl issued a dynastic law recognizing his uncle as princes of Baden. On July 10, 1819, the rights of Counts Hochberg to the Baden duke's throne were recognized by the great powers [2] . In 1830, after the death of Duke Ludwig, Count Leopold von Hochberg inherited the Baden Duke's throne. His descendants ruled Baden until 1918 .

In the Grand Duchy of Baden, the order of inheritance was determined in accordance with hemispherical law with an advantage for male members of the dynasty. Women were allowed to inherit only upon the complete cessation of all male descendants of this dynasty.
