Centro is the oldest district of the city, the core around which the rest of Madrid has “grown” over the centuries. During archaeological excavations in the area, evidence of the existence of a permanent settlement on this site was discovered even during the times of Muslim rule in Spain . In the second half of the 9th century, the Emir of Cordoba, Muhammad I, built a fort in the place where the Royal Palace is now located. Part of the ruins of this fortress has survived to this day. A little to the east of the fort at that time there was a small "suburb" called Magerith .

In 1085, Madrid, then all within the borders of the present Centro , came under the rule of Christianity, and by 1123 reached an unprecedented peak. In 1561, the king of Spain, Philip II , built a residence on the territory of present Centro , which caused the second wave of prosperity of the city.
