The model for the picture was Ellen Smith [1] . The picture shows a flirty young woman on a dark green background. With her left hand she holds an unbuttoned dress, under which a white lower shirt is visible, and in her right hand she grasped a red-gold necklace with a heart-shaped pendant, equipped with a bracelet around her wrist [2] . Her dark red hair is decorated with a hairpin in the form of a spiral inlaid with pearls [2] . The same hairpin can be seen in other paintings by Rossetti - “ Christmas Carol ”, “ Monna Bath ”, “ Mariana ”, “ Gazebo in the Meadow ”, “ Beatrice ”. Her dress and jewelry of the girl in a single red and gold palette. In the upper left corner of the picture is the inscription Joli Coeur , in the upper right - Rossetti's monogram and the indication of the year (1867) [2] . Virginia Sertis, compiler of the A Catalog Raisonné, noted that the pose and face of the model are similar to the girl on the left from the picture “ Beloved ” (Ellen Smith also posed for this image), so she suggested that “Joli Coeur” was created on the basis of the old sketch for “Beloved” [1] . Initially, the work was bought by William Graham, but later it was acquired by industrialist William Turner [1] . The artist’s brother, critic William Michael Rossetti , says that this is the only Rossetti work that William Graham “parted with” [3] .
