The curse of a nun

1952 , Romania , Saint Map Abbey. Two nuns heading for an ancient relic are attacked by an invisible force. The wounded nun holds out the second key with the request to complete what was begun, after which it is pulled in by the doors, after which, according to the carved inscription in Latin, there is no God ( Latin Finit hic, deus ). The surviving sister Victoria runs away from an evil entity, which soon appears in the form of a demonic nun. Frightened, Victoria hangs herself . Her body was discovered by a French resident of the village, which delivers food to the monastery every three months.

When the details of the incident reach the Vatican, priest Anthony Burke and young novice Irene are sent to the abbey to investigate the incident.

The couple arrives in Romania, where he meets French, a delivery man who has discovered a dead body, and asks for his help. The Frenchman shows the body of the deceased in the glacier , one of the doors of which leads directly to the monastery, noting with alarm that the position of the corpse has changed: previously lying, now Victoria is sitting. The priest removes the key from the hands of the corpse, still pressed by the deceased. Having entered the monastery, they find the abbess hiding her face, who sits on the throne, masterfully speaks French and informs them that the nuns observe a vow of silence from dusk to dawn, and it is better for guests to spend the night in the cells of the monastery. On the way to the village, French is attacked by a demon: the unfortunate person is haunted by a vision of Victoria's suicide, but he is saved. At dinner, Irene shares her secret: in childhood, she had visions , and the church became interested in them. Burke then tells Irene about the incident a few years ago: he performed an exorcism ceremony that ended in the death of a demon victim, the little boy Daniel. In the middle of the night, Burke wakes up from the sounds of the radio turning on , and then he sees the ghost of Daniel, who lures him into the cemetery , after which he buries alive. At this time, Irene wakes up and, having discovered Burke’s disappearance, goes to the chapel , where she encounters a demon, reflected in the mirror in the image of a nun, after which it shatters into fragments. Then the novice goes to the cemetery, where, thanks to a vision, she saves the priest.

The next day, the couple returns to the monastery, but only Irene enters, since the abbey is closed to men. She meets with other nuns, from whom she learns that they pray in shifts to keep evil inside. Oana's sister tells the story of the monastery: it was built by the duke , who was obsessed with occultism . The duke summoned evil spirits through a schism in the catacombs , but was killed by Christian knights who sealed the schism with an artifact containing the blood of Jesus Christ . The explosions during World War II forced the split to open again, freeing the evil one . Burke learns from books found in the coffin in which he was buried that the name of the demon is Balak . After some time, he leads a dialogue with the abbess, but in the end discovers that all this time she was dead, and all the dialogues are Valak's manipulations.

Irene is brought into the room of the deceased sister Victoria and locked. Burke is attacked by the ghost of Daniel: obviously, this is nothing but another trick of the demon. Frenchy arrives at the abbey and helps the priest. Waking up at night, Irene, locked in her cell, sees Victoria's ghost , after which the door unlocks herself. Wandering along the corridors, the sister is attacked by a demon who is trying to drag her to where “There is no God,” but thanks to her sister Oana, she manages to escape from the hands of the unclean.

Irene hastily joins the nuns in the chapel in prayer for keeping evil inside the monastery. The worshipers are scattered in different directions, but Irene remains in place, continuing to pray:

lat Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, ora pro nobis peccatoribus, nunc et in hora mortis nostrae. Amen .

Russian Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Invisible forces carve a pentagram on the back of the girl. When Burke and French burst into the chapel, Irene tells them that everyone is praying for salvation. With horror, the girl discovers - the dilapidated chapel is empty, and all this time she prayed alone. The novice realizes that Victoria was the last nun in the monastery and sacrificed herself so that the demon would not take her soul and break free, and that all those days that they were in the monastery were alive only by themselves, and everything else was visions, created by Valak.

The trio theorizes that the demon can only be stopped by sealing the split with the blood of Christ contained in the relic. Irene tells Burke that she is ready to take solemn vows and asks her father to raise her to the status of a professed nun , which he does in the abbey’s chapel.

After the heroes open the door behind which “there is no God,” they open the secret key with the key that Victoria saved and they extract the relic with the blood of Jesus Christ. The trinity is divided: a faceless nun attacks Irene, she manages to escape, but she finds herself in the middle of the pentagram, and then Valak takes possession of her body. Burke stumbles upon a flock of faceless nuns, but defends himself by blessing the flames and setting fire to the lamp oil. Frenchy finds Irene, but Valak grabs him. The guy touches the shrine, and then Irene’s face - and the demon leaves the girl’s body, then to throw her into the flooded cell and attack, trying to drown. Burke is again attacked by the ghost of Daniel, but this time he is wounded. Irene succeeds in swallowing the cross, which is in the relic, and when the demon thinks he killed the girl, she spits out the blood of Christ in his face, after which he goes to hell , thereby sealing the split that was discovered before.

Exhausted, Irene faints, Frenchy makes her artificial respiration , and she regains consciousness. The girl asks Frenchy what his name really is, what he answers to - Maurice, after which Irene thanks him. When they leave the monastery, it turns out that Valak desecrated Maurice, as evidenced by the inverted cross on his neck.

Twenty years later, at a university seminar, Carolyn Perron watches as Ed and Lorraine Warren present a video in which they try to expel a demon from an obsessed Maurice. Inverted crosses begin to appear on the man’s body, then Maurice grabs Lorraine’s hand, and the visions of her husband’s death, which are mentioned in the film “ Spell 2 ”, are transmitted.

• After the first appearance of the nun, the antagonist from Spell 2 , the public really liked this character, which caused him great popularity. The creators decided to do spin-offs on it ^[3] . It turned out the second terrible character from the franchise (after " The Curse of Annabelle ").

Development

June 15, 2016 Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema announced the 2016 spin-off of the film Spell 2 , entitled The Nun ^[5] . David Leslie Johnson, who was later replaced by Gary Doberman and James Wang, was originally appointed as the film's screenwriter. ^[6]

On April 5, 2017, the first trials took place, where Demian Bichir became the first actor in the film as a priest to investigate the nun's mysterious suicide. ^[7] Soon Taissa Farmiga joined the lead role ^[8] . Then Bonnie Aarons entered the cast to reprise the role of the demon Valak ^[9] . Later, Charlotte Hope , Jonas Bloket, and Ingrid Bisu joined the film ^{[10] [11] [12]} .

Filming

The main filming of the film began on May 3, 2017 in Bucharest under the direction of cameraman Maxim Alexander ^[13] . The scenes were filmed in the Palace of Parliament building in June, for a fee of € 5,000 per hour ^[14] . Filming also took place at the Corvinas castle in Hunedoara and in Sighisoara , Transylvania ^[15] . On June 22, 2017, film director Corin Hardy announced on his pages on social networks the end of the 38-day shooting period and the start of editing the next day ^[16] .

The curse of the nun was planned to be released in US theaters on July 13, 2018, and in Russia a day earlier. In mid-February, Warner Bros. Studios reported that she had moved the date of the premiere of the film from July 13 to September 7 (September 20 in Russia) ^[17] .

The film received mostly negative reviews from film critics. At Rotten Tomatoes, his rating is 27% based on 164 reviews. The consensus of critics reports the following: “The film boasts a strong acting, creepy atmosphere and a couple of decent stories, but its sins include inconsistent logic and narrative slack.” On the Metacritic website , the movie has 46 points out of 100 based on 32 reviews ^[18] .

On August 12, 2017, James Wang was asked a question about the continuation and plot of “The Curse of the Nun 2”, to which he replied: “If the Curse of the Nun“ rolls well ”, then this may lead to work on Part 2, and it somehow will be connected with the story of Lorraine, which we created with the first two “Spells” ” ^[19] .
