Education

He defended a licensed degree in sacred theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and received a master's degree from Catholic University of America , Washington, DC . [one]

Career

Early career

He was ordained a priest on June 21, 1953. [2] From 1956 to 1958, De Andrea worked as a teacher in Kenya .

In 1958, he was sent to the Catholic Diocese of Greensburg, Pennsylvania , where he served in parishes and various Catholic institutions for twenty years.

From 1961 to 1964, he was chaplain and professor of theology at Seton Hill Women's Catholic University . From 1964 to 1967, he was the principal of the St. Joseph Hall School in Greensburg, PA . [one]

Diplomatic Service

In the eighties, Archbishop De Andrea served at the Vatican's Office at the United Nations in New York . In 1994, he was appointed to the Pontifical Council for Pastoral Care of Migrants and Wanderers . [3]

In 2001, he was appointed the titular archbishop of Anzio , and then served as the apostolic nuncio in Kuwait , Yemen , Bahrain and the apostolic delegate on the Arabian Peninsula , since 2003 also the apostolic nuncio in Qatar . [2]

In 2005, upon reaching the age limit, De Andrea left the diplomatic service. [four]

From 2008 to 2013, Archbishop De Andrea was an assessor of the Order of the Holy Sepulcher .

In 2011-2012, after the resignation of Grand Master Cardinal John Patrick Foley due to poor health and even until the appointment of Cardinal Edwin Frederick O'Brien as his successor, he temporarily acted as Grand Master. [five]

Russia

While serving as Acting Grand Master, he visited Moscow for the first investment ceremony of the Master's Delegate of the Order in Russia. [6] In the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation on the occasion of his visit, the Commission on Interethnic Relations and Freedom of Conscience organized a round table on the topic: “Freedom of conscience in the traditions of European-Christian culture”, in which De Andrea participated. Family

He was the son of Antonio and Antoinette (Marchetti) De Andrea. His older brother Giovanni de Andrea was a priest who also became archbishop and nuncio in various countries. After his death in Rome , De Andrea was buried next to his brother in a cemetery in his hometown of Rivarolo Canavese .

In the USA he was called Fr. Joseph de Andrea, and even after he became archbishop, chose to remain Joe's father for his parishioners. [eight]
