History

The 68th Army Corps was formed on October 11, 1993 from the 51st Army in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, which was part of the Far Eastern Military District . [2] [3] It included the 33rd motorized rifle division in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk [4] , the 18th machine gun and artillery division in Goryachie Klyuchi [5] and the 31st anti-aircraft missile brigade in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk [6] . In 1997, the corps commander, Lieutenant General Gennady Anoshin, died of heart failure in an airplane [7] . In 2002, the 31st anti-aircraft missile brigade was disbanded [6] . Sources differ on the dates of the dissolution of the corps. According to Alexei Gaidai, the corps was disbanded on December 1, 2006 [8] . The 2014 Nezavisimaya Gazeta report indicated the date of the dissolution of the corps in 2010 [9] . On June 1, 2009, as part of the reform of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, the 33rd Motorized Rifle Division was reorganized into the 39th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade . [four]

In April 2014, the corps was recreated from units already deployed on Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands: the 18th machine gun and artillery division and the 39th separate motorized rifle brigade [9] under the command of Major General Valery Asapov . In 2014, the 676th separate engineering battalion was formed [10] . In July 2015, Major General Alexander Peryazev was appointed corps commander after Major General Valery Asapov was sent on a business trip to the Southern Military District [11] . The corps switched to a contract picking system from August 2016 [12] . In February 2017, Major General Dmitry V. Glushenkov was appointed commander of the corps, replacing Major General Alexander Peryazev, who was appointed commander of the 20th Guards Army of the Western Military District [13] .
