History
Creation - 1994
Channel broadcasting began in 1994 as a result of the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin decided to open a state satellite channel in Arabic, which was intended for viewers from neighboring Arab countries. Shortly after the opening of the channel, broadcasts of the sessions of the Knesset and the Israeli parliament began. Until 1998, the channel was called the third channel.
Channel Revival 1998
In early 1998, due to low ratings, the channel rebranded in the hope of attracting more viewers. The new brand was called "Channel 33" with the slogan "Channel 33 - much more interesting!".
Arabic-speaking era - 2002
In 2002, Reshut Hashidur opened the IBA Arab Channel, which was intended for the Arab-speaking population. It was originally broadcast on Channel One for 2-4 hours a day. Later, the channel began to be broadcast separately from others, on its button.
Due to the lack of Arabic broadcasts, the channel also broadcast reruns from channel 33 and 1. A few years later, Reshut Hashidur realized that he could not serve three channels at the same time for financial reasons and decided to merge Channel 33 with IBA Arab Channel. This happened in 2004. So, channel 33 finally fulfilled the purpose for which it was originally created.
Termination of Broadcasting of Knesset Meetings - 2004
After combining the channels, the broadcasting of the Knesset meetings continued for some time, but too little airtime was allocated for this. For this reason (and also because of the initiative to create a parliamentary channel like C-SPAN in the USA), the Knesset passed a law in 2004 that led to the creation of the Knesset Channel . On May 3, Channel 33 ceased broadcasting the Knesset in favor of Channel 99 .
Modernity
The channel is aimed at Arabic-speaking viewers. Due to financial reasons, the IBA decided to stop broadcasting the channel in Europe. There are plans to make the channel news. Since 2013, it is planned to restore broadcasting in Europe.
Restart
In September 2011, it was announced that channel 33 would be restarted as a news channel broadcasting in Hebrew, Arabic and English. The channel was supported by the 1st channel and the Sieve Bet station. The first pilot broadcast projects were implemented in May from 08:00 to 16:00. During prime time , Arabic broadcasts continued. Soon, the channel began broadcasting on the Internet .
Close
IBA was canceled on May 14, 2017, so Channel 33 was closed. IBA credentials were transferred to IBC , Mikan 33 replaced channel 33.
