Biography
Vahur Afanasyev was born on August 24, 1979 in Tartu . I went to school number 10 and number 12. Then I studied at the University of Tartu , who graduated in 2002 with a degree in economic policy [1] . Since 1998, he has been a member of the literary association “League of Young Authors” (Noorte Autorite Koondis; NAK), and since 2006, the Union of Writers of Estonia .
He worked as a journalist, media analyst, copywriter, creative director and PR-manager.
From 2005 to 2010, he lived in Belgium , in the city of Brussels , where he worked as an EU official [2] .
Writer's career
Afanasyev began his writing career with writing poetry in 1995. In 1997-1998 he published three collections of poems, which he posted on the Internet. The poems in print were published in the literary magazine Vikerkaar in 1998. His first book, Kandiline maailm, was published in 2000. The titles of his subsequent publications began with the same letters Ka : a collection of short stories Kanepi kirik (2002), a collection of poems Kaantega viin (2004), a novel Kastraat Ontariost (2005), books Katedraal Emajões (2006) and Kaadrid otsustavad (2007) [3] . The works of Afanasyev were also published in several collective collections and translated into Finnish, Russian, Romanian, Dutch and Hungarian.
In 2006, his book Katedraal Emajões was nominated for the poetic prize of the Estonian foundation Kultuurkapital [4] . In 2011, his book Minu Brüssel was recognized by Go Reisiajakiri magazine as the best book for travelers [5] . In 2015, his collection of poems Tünsamäe tigu received the Kultuurkapital poetic prize [6] .
Musical career
In addition to writing books, Afanasyev also writes electronic music under the name of tra_art, electric guitar rock, blues and country music under the name of Kurluk Ulica and experimental noise-pop under the name of Kannibal Elektor.
The tra_art disk was published together with the book “Kanepi kirik” in 2002. Two of his compositions were on the disc with singing writers [7] .
He also wrote lyrics to the songs of Orelipoiss, Skriimsilm and Päris Anny.
Director career
Afanasyev has been shooting experimental short films since 2006. In June 2008, he presented his autobiographical documentary “Where dreams end”. The film was also officially unveiled at the Eclectica festival. In April 2009, he finished filming a documentary called “Rong Way”, which tells about the difficulties of traveling by train from Estonia to Europe.
