The official history of the geological service of the Ukrainian Soviet Republic began on February 1, 1918. The State Geology and Mineral Resources Service of Ukraine was established by reorganizing the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Ukraine in accordance with Decree of the President of Ukraine dated December 9, 2010 No. 1085/2010 “On Optimizing the System of Central Executive Bodies”.
History
At the beginning of the 20th century, the geological exploration of Ukraine was low due to the lack of a single state geological service. With the outbreak of World War I, the need for such a service escalated, and a hydrogeological department was established in Kiev for the armies of the Southwestern Front.
In 1938, the Ukrainian Geological Trust was transformed into the Geological Administration of the Ukrainian SSR, which since 1939 became subordinate to the Committee for Geology under the Council of People's Commissars of the USSR. The main areas were: conducting exploration of non-metallic materials, hydrogeological studies, geophysical and exploration. Much attention was paid to conducting complex geological studies on the Nagolny Ridge and exploration for manganese at the Nikopol deposit, exploration of graphite (Zavalievsk deposit) and more. A petrographic map of the Ukrainian crystalline massif was compiled, geological maps of medium and large scales, as well as small-scale - survey maps.
The main coordination and geological department “Ukrgeology” was liquidated in accordance with the Order of the Council of Ministers of the USSR of 08.15.1991 No. 912-r and the order of the Ministry of Geology of the USSR of 05.09.1991 No. 106.
