Van der Bursa ( Dutch: Van der Beurze also Beurse ) - a well-known Belgian family of Polish-Jewish origin , founded in 1409 the world's first exchange. The family took the surname Beurs (from lat. Bursa - wallet) which subsequently entered many European languages as a definition of the concept of "exchange". The van der Bursa family crest consisted of three wallets [1] . After the massacres in Brussels in 1370, Van Der Bursa was baptized and they were no longer threatened by Jewish pogroms and exiles overwhelmed Europe. In addition, the position of the family was strengthened by the fact that the youngest daughter of Peter Van Der Bursa, Maria, married for the famous Polish prince Timothy from Nova Rud - the grandson of the famous Esterka and King Casimir III . Timothy was well educated, a graduate of the Jagiellonian University spoke 4 languages , skillfully sorted out complex legal matters helping the family to develop trade. Such famous guests as Jean de Villiers, Count de Lil-Adan, Jacob of Bavaria , Jan van Eyck often visited Van Der Bource. It was thanks to Jacob of Bavaria that the first ever auction for the sale of a work of art was held. At the auction, Timothy showed through Jacob Philip Good III the golden pendant in the form of the Golden Fleece he brought from Greece .

World First Exchange

The family actively gathered merchants from all over Europe in a small square of the city of Bruges [2] opposite the two Ter Beurse and De Oude Beurs hotels belonging to it. It was the first exchange in the world to host bill trades [3] . The Bursa Exchange opened and closed at the sound of a bell. The same bell is still used on the New York Stock Exchange . [4] .
