History
In 1811, Old Believers from among the Cossacks-Nekrasovtsy began to move to Izmail from behind the Danube. The Russian government has provided them with significant benefits, including relative religious freedom. This state of affairs attracted to the Danube and the Old Believers from other regions of Russia. In 1812 the Nikolsky Old Believer Monastery was opened under Ishmael, but already in 1829 it was closed on the initiative of I. N. Inzov [1] .
In July 1831, Old Believers received the highest permission for the construction of a stone church. In 1833, a new church was consecrated in honor of St. Nikola the Wonderworker [1] [2] .
According to the results of the Crimean War in 1856, the southern part of Bessarabia departs to Wallachia . In 1857, an Old Believer diocese was established in Izmail with a pulpit in the St. Nicholas Church. In 1897–9999, the cathedral was repaired and expanded [1] .
In 1947, the Izmail diocese was abolished. During Soviet times, the temple was not closed [1] .
