The father wanted to make Nicole his heir, because he did not have sons. However, according to the will of Rene II, Lorraine and Bar could only be transmitted along the male line.

One of the closest heirs was Charles de Vaudemont, the duke's nephew, and on May 23, 1621, Nicole married him. They had no children.

Henry II died on July 31, 1624. His brother Francois, father of Charles de Vaudemont, claimed his rights as heir, and on November 21, 1625, the General States of Lorraine recognized him as duke. After 5 days, François renounced in favor of his son, who became the Duke of Lorraine under the name of Charles IV .

Although his wife Nicole was considered the Duchess of Lorraine, she did not use any power and was completely removed from control.

Charles IV repeatedly tried to divorce Nicole, but to no avail - could not receive a papal blessing. In 1637, he even married Beatrice de Cusans, but was excommunicated (1642), and their marriage was declared invalid.

In 1634, Lorraine and Bar were occupied by French troops. Nicole Lorraine was taken to Paris, where she lived the rest of her life.
