Creation History
The first version of the song was written by Max Martin , Peter Svensson, Ali Pai and the Shroud of Kotechei. (They are all songwriters and concurrently music producers, the first three from Sweden, and Kotecha from the USA. Previously, Max Martine has already worked with Grande on the hits “ Problem ” and “ Break Free ”) [1] .
The Canadian rhythm and blues singer The Weekend , with whom Grande sings this song, is best known for indecent songs of his authorship, in which he narrates about his sexual adventures [1] .
According to Songfacts, Ariana Grande, after recording a demo of this song, sent it to her label friend The Weekend. He told Rolling Stone magazine [1] :
| It was a great song, but it was a little too typical. I could not imagine myself on it. So he remade it, made it dark [1] . |
So, The Weekend corrected the text and sent it back to Ariana Grande producer Max Martin [1] .
As a result, for The Weekend, the single was a turning point in his career, his first hit. He says: “My label, as it were, gave me an effective pass. I think, at this moment, for me, the stars successfully converged. When I see a crack, I get in there ” [1] .
