History of creation and release
Designed for regional transportation, the EN57 is based on the early model EW55 . EW55 were the first electric trains built in Poland. They were manufactured at the Pafawag factory in Wroclaw.
Produced from 1962 to 1993. A total of 1,412 electric trains were built, many of which are still operating. This is the longest production train in the world. The first trains had a first-class cabin. Starting from 602 (EN57-602), trains were produced only with second-class cars. Due to the long production period, trains built in different years have differences in design. Trains with numbers up to 1113 were issued with corrugated sides and 3 windshields in the cabin. Compositions No. 1114–1825 have flat lateral sides, 3 windshields, while trains No. 1900–1953 are built with flat sides and already with 2 windshields in the driver's cab, resembling the EW58 electric train .
Trains numbered 201-206 are formed from surviving wagons from previously decommissioned trains due to fire and other incidents. Since 2006, Przewozy Regionalne has modernized several formulations with financial support from the European Union. The appearance of electric trains has changed, including head cars and the interior. The electrical and mechanical parts for the most part have not changed. The upgraded trains received a new numbering starting from No. 2001. EN-57 served as the basis for electric trains EN71 , ED72 , ED73 . The Polish company Szybka Kolej Miejska, which operates the EN57 electric train in Tricity , has also modernized the interior of the cars.
Specifications
The electric train consists of three cars. Four LK450 traction motors, each rated at 145 kW, are located in the middle car. Head cars do not have engines. One of the cars is marked with the letter “A”, the other - “B”. The compressor is located in the carriage “A”, and the battery is in the carriage “B”. Each carriage inside consists of 3 parts and a corridor. In head cars, 2 parts are designed to accommodate passengers, and a third - for luggage. On an average motor car, all 3 parts are for passengers. At first, there was a toilet in each part of the electric train, but as a result of fires from a nearby electrical wiring, motor cars did not have toilets. The EN57 electric train can also consist of 2 or 3 trains linked together. Used Scharfenberg automatic coupler . Each train accommodates 212 passengers.
In other countries
Three electric trains were exported to Yugoslavia in 1964.
