A desert is a formerly secluded monastery or cell [1] , a monastic settlement in the tradition of Orthodoxy , usually a monastery located far from the main monastery, located in a place uninhabited by people.
Formerly, small male monastic communities, usually having no more than one temple , were called deserts. In the future, such a monastery could significantly grow in size, but retain the word deserts in its name. The inhabitants of the desert were called brothers and gathered for a joint meal in the refectory , as well as for joint services in the temple. The rest of the time they worked (“carried obedience”) or spent time in cells . Along the perimeter of the deserts could be fenced by a monastery fence .
Currently it is part of the name of some monasteries in the territory of the former Russian Empire .
Also, deserts are an uninhabited place, territory. A similar concept wasteland .
