Biography

Vitaly Derbenev was born on August 5, 1976 in Mogilev.

He was engaged in weightlifting under the leadership of Anatoly Lobachev . [1] In 1996, he was the silver medalist of the World Junior Championship, after which he began to be involved in the national team of Belarus. In 2000, he participated in the Olympic Games in Sydney , where he took 7th place.

Throughout the 2000s, he was one of the leading flyweight athletes not only in Belarus, but also in Europe. In 2001, 2004, 2005 and 2007 he became the winner of the European Championships , and in 2002, 2003, 2006 and 2010 he won the title of champion of the continent. At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, he was close to getting a medal, but, having shown the same result with bronze medalist Sedat Artuch ( Turkey ), lost to him in his own weight and remained fourth.

In 2011, due to problems with weight loss and chronic shoulder injury, he decided to end his sports career [2] .
