The San Sebastian Jazz Festival (now officially named Heineken Jazzaldia ) has been held annually in the third week of July since 1966 and lasts 5 days. As part of it, about a hundred concerts are organized, paid and free, indoors and outdoors. Especially popular are the events on Surriola Beach and on the grounds of the Kursaal Congress Palace. In 2016 , the festival was visited by more than 175 thousand spectators. [one]
Charles Mingus , Ella Fitzgerald , Oscar Peterson, Dizzy Gillespie , Davis Miles , Dexter Gordon , Art Blakey , Ray Charles , Sarah Vaughan , Stan Getz , Donald Eugene Cherry , Ornett Coleman , Jerry , among many other artists at the festival over the years have performed Charles Mingus , Weather Report , Hank Jones , Sonny Rollins , McCoy Tyner , Winton Marsalis , BB King , Diane Kroll , Van Morrison , Lisa Minnelli , Pat Metini , Herbie Hancock , Chick Coria and Keith Jarrett . The first Festival was held on September 10 and 11, 1966, [3] from the next year it was held in July (which tradition remains to this day). The festival arose as an international competition of amateur musicians and for a long time was for them the best way to express themselves; Mickey Baker was the only recognized professional at the festival at that time.
