Amiens 1885 (drafts tournament)

Amiens 1885 - the first-ever international tournament on checkers on a 100-square board . It was held from 4 to 16 August 1885 in the city of Amiens (France). The tournament was organized by a group of checkers of the city, headed by the famous drafts encyclopaedist Georges Baleden . The tournament was attended by 16 players, of whom 14 were the best fighters of France at that time. One participant was represented by Holland (Hermann Bode) and England (Victor Desire Nicode). They played in two circles. The special prize to the winner was established on his own behalf by French President Jules Grevy . According to the regulations, the first 50 moves were given one hour, and for every next 10 moves - 15 minutes each. Six games were played per day. The winner of the tournament was Anatole Dussault , representing the city of Bordeaux (France). The second place was taken by Henri Lesage from Lille (France). The third winner was Baleden. In general, the first seven places were taken by the representatives of France. The tournament played a big role in the popularization of checkers. Special prizes for the beauty received Zimmerman for the game with Moenkurt and Deshayo for the game with Nikode. Sometimes the international tournament of 1885 in Amiens is called the first unofficial world championship in international drafts, and Dussault, respectively, the first unofficial world champion.
