Biography
Childhood
Lisa Gerrard was born into an Anglo-Irish family. Her parents, Nanette and John (Nanette, John), moved to Australia from the UK in search of work. The future singer grew up in the poor suburb of Melbourne Prahran, mostly populated by immigrants from the Mediterranean and the Middle East . According to Lisa herself, as a child, she loved to walk on the banks of the river, where women did laundry and often sang their national songs in languages that the girl did not understand. Largely thanks to this, a peculiar manner of singing without words was formed in her. Lisa had two brothers: the eldest - John Gerrard - ml. and the younger Mark (tragically died in 1996).
In Dead Can Dance
Lisa's musical career began in 1981. It was then that the 7-inch single “Centerfold” of the Melbourne punk band Microfilm, with her vocals (songs “Centerfold” and “Window”) was released. Until 1998, along with Brendan Perry, she was one of the main members of the Dead Can Dance group.

In the late 80s. Gerrard and Perry lived for some time in Barcelona ( Spain ). In 1989, Lisa starred in the anti-utopian film directed by Agustin Villaronga “Child of the Moon” (“Moon Child”, Spanish “El Nino de la Luna” ) in one of the main roles, which remains her only acting work in the cinema.
In 1995, she took up solo work, recording the album “The Mirror Pool”. The song “Sanvean” from this album (first appeared on the Dead Can Dance live album “Toward The Within”) has become one of the singer’s most famous career.
In 1996, the last Dead Can Dance album, “Spiritchaser”, was released before the band broke up. It is dedicated to the younger brother of Lisa, Mark, who died in the same year in a car accident.
Solo career
In 1998, as a result of a creative conflict during the recording of the eighth studio album, Dead Can Dance broke up, and Lisa fully embarked on a solo career. A year later, the album “Duality” was released, recorded in collaboration with Australian electronic musician Peter Burke .
In the late 90s - early 2000s. Gerrard became especially famous for creating music for films (Anger, Own Man, Ali, Mission Impossible 2 , Riding a Whale ). In 2001, she, together with co-author Hans Zimmer , received the Golden Globe Award for the soundtrack for the movie Gladiator . This music was also nominated for an Academy Award .
Gerrard uses glossolalia , voice recording, much more often than he sings in the traditional sense. Her repertoire contains only a few songs in English (for example, “The Human Game” from the album “Duality”), the rest simply do not have lyrics. She plays various instruments, including ethnic ones, especially skillfully on yangtsin .
In 2002, Lisa recorded a duet with Breton folk singer Denez Prigent. The song "Gortoz A Ran (J'attends)" was released on his album "Irvi", and was also used in the soundtrack for the movie " Black Hawk ."
Lisa Gerrard willingly collaborates with representatives of electronic music , who (among them Orbital , Delerium , The Future Sound Of London ) also often use samples with her singing in their compositions.
In 2004, the album "Immortal Memory" was released, created by Lisa in collaboration with the Irish composer Patrick Cassidy . Part of the compositions from the disk was originally intended for the soundtrack to Mel Gibson 's film “ Passion of Christ ”, but they did not get into the picture. The album was the last one released on the 4AD label - after the end of the multi-year contract, the parties did not renew it. At the same time, Lisa worked on the solo album "Mantras of a Lost Archetype", but for unknown reasons he was never released, only the track list was released. Gerrard performs some songs from this album at concerts.
In the same year, composer Ennio Morricone invited Lisa Gerrard as vocalist to record the soundtrack for the Hungarian film " Without Fate " dedicated to the victims of the Holocaust .
In 2005, Gerrard and Perry temporarily teamed up for a concert tour of Europe and North America. Within its framework, they gave on April 3 in St. Petersburg the only concert of those reanimated at the time of Dead Can Dance in Russia.
In September 2006, the British documentary filmmaker Clive Collier's film “Sanctuary” was released, telling about the singer’s creative career and the ups and downs of her personal life. A few weeks later, Lisa's second solo album, “The Silver Tree,” was released on a CD only in Australia. In the spring of 2007, he was reissued in several European countries, the USA and Canada. Then the former label of Lisa 4AD released a collection of her best things, including solo works, music for films, and songs from the albums of Dead Can Dance.
Lisa Gerrard has two daughters, Lashna and Teresa (Lashna, Teresa), born in a marriage with designer Jacek Tuschewski. She lives with them on her own farm in the vicinity of the town of Moe in the Gipsland area (in southeastern Australia, Victoria ). Here is her own studio.
In the fall of 2007, as part of a tour in support of The Silver Tree, Lisa Gerrard performed in St. Petersburg (November 20, Music Hall) and in Moscow (November 22, Estrada Theater).
In December 2007, Lisa recorded a joint program with German composer and electronic music performer Klaus Schulze . A double album, entitled " Farscape ", was released in July 2008. Joint concert performances of musicians are presented on the albums “ Rheingold. Live at the Loreley ”(2 CDs and DVDs) and“ Dziekuje Bardzo-Vielen Dank ”(3CDs and DVDs). Additional material recorded in the studio together with Schulze was included on the mini-album “ Come Quietly ” (2009), which was sold at the concerts of Lisa and Klaus. Scheduled for release album " Farscape 2".
In 2009, Gerrard wrote the soundtrack for the action movie "Balibo", receiving two film awards for this work - "APRA Screen Music Awards" and "Aria Awards".
Lisa Gerrard was helped by Michael Edwards, Patrick Cassidy, Peter Bourke and James Orr on the solo album The Black Opal. The record includes a number of songs performed by the singer during the last round (“Sleep”, “Desert Song”, “Black Forest”, “Serpent and the Dove” and “On an Ocean”), as well as new compositions and a cover for Bob’s song Dylan's “ All Along the Watchtower ”. The album was released in November 2009 in electronic form (sold on the singer’s official website), and on physical media it became available in 2010 in standard and deluxe editions (the latter contains a video clip and bonus tracks on an additional dvd). “The Black Opal” was the first album released by Lisa Gerrard on her own label Gerrard Records.
In addition, Gerrard worked simultaneously on music for a number of films: the Japanese Ichi, the Australian Playing for Charlie, as well as Defector (a documentary about the Cold War).
In July 2010, the album “Departum” was released on the Gerrard Records label (Lisa’s collaboration with Marcello De Francisci ).
Reunion
In 2012, 7 years after the last general tour, Gerrard and Perry reunited again and went on a concert tour in support of the Anastasis album.
