Operator (military affairs)

An operator (in military affairs ) is a person or other materialized rational entity that plays the role of the primary link in the operator-machine combination, where a machine is any complex model of weapons and military equipment ( station , complex or system ).

In the indicated combination, the operator is its function , in the subject-object plane in terms of control theory “machine” is the control object , “operator” is the subject of control / influence / interaction. In the event that the main function of the operator is firing from a barrel or missile weapons , the qualifying term gunner-operator or gunner-operator is used . Ergonomics is devoted to the issues of interaction between the operator and the machine, improving the speed of links, optimizing the cost of energy and other resources, improving the quality and effectiveness of combat work, reducing the cost of time and money, etc.

Etymology

Initially, in the Russian-speaking (Soviet) military terminology, only servicemen were referred to as military personnel working with equipment having a control panel , however, as the military hardware became more complicated, the list of military accounting specialties containing the wording “operator” was continuously expanded and included all new specialties.

Element Base

It is theoretically possible and practically feasible, and military science knows a whole series of examples when an animal or a bird was the operator of experimental weapons and military equipment (see, for example, the Pigeon project), however, most of these projects did not go beyond experimental design work and did not justified itself in terms of expediency. At the same time, both humans and representatives of the fauna are biological species , that is, operators on a living elemental base, while the elemental base of this concept is not limited to only one biological dimension. With the development of military science and technology, the introduction of advanced achievements of scientific and technological progress in the field of robotics and automation , it is theoretically possible to replace a person with highly developed machines ( robots ), which will have a set of functions that allow them to control lower-order military equipment.
