On October 5, 1910, the Portuguese monarchy was abolished. During the Republican revolution, the last king Manuel II of the Bragans-Saxe-Coburg-Gotha dynasty (1908-1910) was deposed and emigrated to England.

Currently, the head of the royal Brahans dynasty is Prince Duarte Piu , Duke of Braganca (born 1945), who inherited his title after the death of his father Duarte Nuno in 1976 [1] . The Portuguese royal throne was to be transmitted on the basis of the birthright with the advantage of male descendants over female [1] [2] .

Inheritance Rules

According to the Constitutions of 1822 , 1826 and 1838 , as well as the constitutional charter of 1826 restored in 1842 , the royal throne of Portugal was to be transferred to the legitimate male heirs of the ruling monarch, and if they were suppressed, to representatives of the side branches of the Braganza dynasty [2] .

In 1842, the Portuguese constitution of 1838 was repealed and the constitutional charter of 1826 was restored [2] . Among other things, the charter of 1826 stipulated that if the Portuguese Queen Maria II did not have legal descendants, the crown could go to the heir from the side line of the house of Braganza.

The descendants of Queen Mary II (on the female line) are currently alive, but they are not Portuguese citizens and cannot represent the Portuguese royal house.

Order of Inheritance

In 1834, the Portuguese king Miguel I (1828–1834) was defeated in the struggle for power with his older brother Pedro , who as early as 1828 had abandoned the Portuguese throne in favor of his eldest daughter, the Infanta Maria II. Miguel was forced to emigrate, but did not give up claims to the Portuguese throne. The current head of the Royal House of Portugal, Duarte Piu , Duke of Bragança [1] , great-grandson of Miguel I.
