Northern Maluku (also Northern Molucca ; indon. Maluku Utara ) is a province of Indonesia located on the northern islands of the Moluccan archipelago . The largest island in the province is Halmahera , which, however, is rarely populated.

The administrative center is the city of Sofi on the island of Halmahera . The capital de facto is the city of Ternate , the largest city in the province with a population of 228 105 people (2018). [2]
The happiest province in Indonesia, according to surveys by the BPS ( Central Bureau of Statistics ). [3]
Of the 1,474 islands, 89 are inhabited.
From 1950 to 1999, all the Moluccas constituted the single province of Maluku . In 1999, the northern part of the region was separated into a separate province - Northern Maluku.
