The Church of St. Demetrius of Solunsky (another name is St. Stephen ) is an architectural monument of the 14th century in Feodosia (complex of the Genoese fortress ).
History
Built in the 14th century by Greek society on the territory of the city citadel . Perhaps later it belonged to the Armenian church . It was restored in 1955 - 1956 .
Description
Architecture
The one-apse square basilica , rectangular in plan, is blocked by a box vault on the supporting arches. It is distinguished by strict architecture, simplicity of form and modest size (7x8 meters ). It was built of rubble stone, not outwardly lined. Entrance is from the west. The entrance portal is profiled with hewn stones, a lancet niche is located above it. The gable roof is tiled .
Near the temple are the Armenian Fountain of 1491 and a rock monument, discovered in 1913 - 1915 by a doctor K. Belilovsky near the mineral spring "Kafa".
Painting
The remains of the fresco are preserved in the interior. In the best condition are the paintings of the altar apse :
- “ Christ on the throne” (the figure of Christ, to the right of which stands John the Baptist , and to the left - the Virgin ).
- The Eucharist (on the left is Christ with a cup and six apostles , on the right is Christ with bread and six disciples).
- "The Virgin and Child".
On the western wall are fragments of The Last Judgment. Today, painting is almost lost. Some of the frescoes contain inscriptions in Greek , which made it possible to consider the temple Greek.
