Biography
William Penn Brown was born in India into a family of Baptist missionaries and spent his childhood in Japan before emigrating to the United States and starting a successful postage stamp business in New York in 1860 [1] .
Contribution to Philately
Beginning in the 1860s, William Brown was actively engaged in the sale of postage stamps to collectors in New York, claiming to be the second time philatelic dealer in the city. He was familiar with John Walter Scott and provided financial assistance to him when Walter Scott decided to engage in the trade in postage stamps [1] .
William Brown was an innovator in conducting auctions of rare postage stamps, as a result of which other auction houses eventually began to use his auction trading methods [1] .
In 1864, William Brown was the editor of the first journal of American philatelists s London and New York Stamp Collectors Review ( London and New York Stamp Collectors Review) [1] .
Selected Works
- Published in 1870 a catalog called The Curiosity Cabinet , which first presented , including his account of the discovery of the postmaster New Haven [1] .
- Subsequently, he wrote his memoirs about the early period of collecting stamps [1] .
Honors and Awards
In 2008, William Brown was honored to be admitted to the American Philatelic Society [1] .
