Biography

Born in Dzerzhinsk . He studied at the local chemical technical school named after the Red Army (DKHMT). There he began to engage in speed skating with coach Alexander Seliverstov, physical education teacher. Having shown good results at the regional level, Gennady decided to seriously pursue a sports career. In the late 1950s, he received a call to the USSR national team from coach Konstantin Kudryavtsev .

At the World Championship in 1957, he showed a second time at a distance of 500 m, taking the 13th position in the final protocol. In 1959, at the World Championships in Oslo, Gennady Voronin showed the first time at a distance of 500 m. At the end of the championship, he curled 18th place. In the European championship of the same year, he became the second in a similar discipline.

Participant of the 1960 Olympic Games in Squaw Valley , where he performed poorly - 12th place.

At the end of his career he worked as a coach.

Personal life

In 1959, he married a speed skating colleague Inge Artamonova . The young people met, sharing the same apartment, allocated to their athletes by the company "Dynamo" . Having completed his career on ice, Voronin became the coach of his wife, who achieved excellent results both domestically and internationally.

Over time, family relationships went wrong. Gennady began to drink, gave his wife scenes of jealousy. In December 1965, she left her husband, declaring a desire to divorce him. On January 4, 1966, Voronin killed Inga with a knife in the heart in front of her relatives.

Gennady Voronin was sentenced to 10 years in prison. He spent a year and a half in jails, three in a free settlement. He spent the rest of his life at home in Dzerzhinsk.

He died on May 3, 2004. He was buried at the New City Cemetery.
