Creation History
May 13, 2017 at the Anghami streaming music service was announced a Del Rey song entitled "Coachella - Woodstock in My Mind" [3] . According to the service, the release of the song was supposed to take place on May 15 of the same year [3] . The composition was written by Del Rey and Rick Nowels , and produced by Del Rey, Nowels, Dean Reed and Kieron Manzies [4] . It was originally released on May 15, 2017 as the first non-album single in Del Rey’s discography, along with the release of Lust for Life’s fifth studio album [5] , but ultimately when Del Re moved the album release date from May 26 to 21 July 2017, due to the fact that she wanted to “finalize the album”, the song entered the final version of the list of songs, becoming a promotional single in her support. The song was recorded in late April and early May 2017 [6] . A few hours before the official release, the track was published online [7] .
Del Rey wrote a song on her way back from the American Coachella festival [5] , which she announced on her Instagram account on April 17, 2017. The title of the festival is present in the title of the song, respectively. In a video that the performer posted on Instagram in April 2017, she performs an excerpt of the composition, signing the publication as [8] :
It was difficult for me to spend the weekend dancing and at the same time watching what was happening in North Korea. I find this rope between vigilant observation of everything that happens in the world, and finding enough time to appreciate the beautiful Earth as the Lord made it. On the way home, I had to visit my favorite old place near the side of the world highway, where I did not sit for long in the sequoia grove and wrote a short song. I wanted to share it, hoping that the hope of one person and prayer for peace can contribute to this in the long run [9] .
Original textI had complex feelings about spending the weekend dancing whilst watching tensions w North Korea mount. I find It's a tightrope between being vigilantly observant of everything going on in the world and also having enough space and time to appreciate God's good earth the way it was intended to be appreciated. On my way home I found myself compelled to visit an old favorite place of mine at the rim of the world highway where I took a moment to sit down by the sequoia grove and write a little song. I just wanted to share this in hopes that one individual's hope and prayer for peace might contribute to the possibility of it in the long run.
After the official release of the composition, Del Rey talked about the history of the creation of the track and production on Twitter [10] : ““ What a blessing is to create music. And to have the freedom to share things that excite me in the present tense. I wrote this last month on my way back from Coachella. Thanks to my producer and engineers for changing the situation so quickly “ [11] . A few hours after pouring the song into the network, the track was officially released on streaming services, in iTunes , and audio was also uploaded to the Del Rey channel on YouTube [12] .
Critical Reaction
Reviewer Sam Sodomsky from Pitchfork magazine liked the song, also adding: “Lana wants her words to fly like birds, but she sings them to fall and drift like autumn leaves. <...> Alone, in a crowd, she reaches for a tongue that brings everyone together, praying that this will be enough “ [13] . The journalist Frank Guan from the Vulture blog writes about the title of the composition: “The genius of the song is that it impresses the general identity between the past ( Woodstock festival) and the present ( Coachella festival) so much that the listener sees at the same time, but nothing does not hear “ [14] . The reviewer also noted that the song talks about two “fathers”: the performer and friend Del Rey, Joshua Tilman , whose wife the performer was at the Coachella festival, and also God : “In fact, Tilman exists mainly as an emanation of the deity that Del Rey pretends to be a man” [14] . Jem Asworth from Variety writes: “Part of Lana Del Rey's appeal is the contrast between her sometimes shocking, often hilarious and almost always intriguing lyrics, languid pose and mid-tempo music” [15] . The journalist also noted that the song contains “cold mood, soft trap- beat, insensitive presentation and gentle-prepared backing vocals” typical of Del Rey's compositions [15] .
