On September 7, 1822, the House of Pedro Bragança (1798-1834), royal prince of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarve , a member of the Bragança dynasty, crown prince of Portugal, declared Brazil's independence from the Portuguese kingdom and proclaimed himself emperor of Brazil. The imperial title was officially granted to him on October 12, 1822 . In 1825, a Portuguese-Brazilian treaty was signed in Rio de Janeiro , under which the king of Portugal, Juan VI, was forced to recognize the independence of Brazil, the former Portuguese colony.
Brazil , a colony of Portugal from 1530 to 1815 , in 1815 was officially elevated to the status of the United Kingdom (with Portugal), to the reign of Queen Mary I (Prince Regent House of Juan Bragança, future Juan VI ). In the years 1815 - 1822, the Portuguese kingdom was officially known as the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarve .

Emperors of Brazil (1822–1889)
The Brazilian empire remained a constitutional monarchy until 1889 , when, after a military coup, the Brazilian Republic was proclaimed. At the head of the Brazilian empire were two emperors from the Bragança dynasty:
- House of Pedro I (1822-1831): born in 1798 , died in 1834 . He also held the royal throne of Portugal as Pedro IV (1826-1828). The second son of the Portuguese king Joao VI and the Spanish infante Carlota Joaquin
- House of Pedro II (regency in 1831-1840, personal rule in 1840-1889): born in 1825, died in 1891. The only son of Emperor Pedro I and Maria Leopoldina of Austria .

- Pedro II Brazilian (1889-1891), overthrown as a result of a military coup, emigrated with his family to Europe.
- Isabella of Brazil (1891-1921): genus. in 1846 , she died in 1921 . Imperial princess and regent of Brazil, the eldest daughter of House Pedro II. Her husband - Prince Gaston of Orleans, Earl of D'E, after the death of Pedro II, was considered de jure emperor-consort of Brazil.
