History and background
In September 2015, Basta reported in the video interview to the Gazeta.Ru portal that the release of the album “Basta 5” is scheduled for April 20, 2016 [7] [8] .
The reason for dividing the album into two parts, according to Basta, was the technical moments: “It happened because I didn’t manage to finish the second part in time. There were interesting ideas on how to finalize it ” [9] .
The first single of the album was the song “Where we are not” on October 2, 2015, recorded for the film “ Motherland ” [9] . The second single appeared on February 20, 2016 and it became the song “I look at the sky” to another film - “ Ke-dy ” [4] . The third single from the album - “The Voice” - was recorded with the participation of singer Polina Gagarina , a colleague of Basta on the jury in the fourth season of the TV show of the same name , and was released on April 14 [5] . On the same day, on Channel One in the evening show “ Evening Urgant ”, Basta appeared as a guest, and then with Polina sang a dramatic song with a live sound [10] .
The song "Graduation (Slow)" became a hit after the release of the video clip and one of the most popular songs of the year [11] [12] [13] [14] [15] [16] . By the end of 2017, the composition continued to be popular, it took the 29th place in the Apple Music and iTunes charts among the most popular songs among Russians [17] .
Assessment and criticism
Gazeta.Ru noted the uniqueness of the album by the fact that it does not fit into any genre framework, and also called it one of the main Russian-language albums of the year [1] . However, Basta himself is also unable to determine the style of the album, but characterizes it as rather gloomy and called strange, comparing the result of the recording with a “ midlife crisis ” [6] .
According to the editorial staff of the portal Rap.Ru, the double album became one of the twenty best Russian-language rap albums in 2016 and won the third place in this top [18] .
At the end of 2017, the album occupied the 27th (1st part) and 25th (2nd part) places in the Russian Apple Music and iTunes charts [17] .
