Biography
He was born on November 21 ( December 4, according to the new style) of 1916 in Omsk in a Jewish family. In childhood, he moved to the Urals with his parents.
After graduating from school, in 1933 he began to work as a student of the artist in the Sverdlovskgorstroy system. After David showed his first watercolors at a city exhibition in 1934, he was sent to study at the Sverdlovsk Art School in 1935. He studied under A.A. Zhukov and F.K. Shmelev , graduated from college in 1940. After graduation, he directed the art studio in the House of the Red Army; during the years of World War II he worked in a military medical school evacuated from Kiev .
The first fame as an artist to David Ionin was brought by the still lifes exhibited at the exhibitions of Sverdlovsk artists in 1946-1947 and the All-Union Art Exhibition of 1947 in Moscow. During these years, he created a series of landscapes of Sverdlovsk and the only portrait in his creative activity “Noble driller Illarion Yankin” [2] ( Hero of Socialist Labor ). During the years of development of virgin land, he painted several paintings, two of which - “First Shoots” and “Black Earth” were highly appreciated at the All-Union Art Exhibition in Moscow. At first he worked mainly in the technique of oil painting, then he became interested in graphics and watercolors.
In 1969, Ionin designed the collection "Lenin on the Urals" for the Central Ural Book Publishing House, which received a 1st degree diploma at the All-Union Competition for the Best Publications of 1969-1970. In 1970, he became one of the organizers of the creative community of artists and work collectives of the largest industrial enterprises in Sverdlovsk, writing a series of watercolors about Uralmash . He also worked in the workshops of the Verkh-Isetsk plant , the Pervouralsk Novotrubny plant and the Nizhny Tagil Metallurgical Plant .
For more than 25 years, from 1945 to 1970, David Markovich was the chairman of the board of the Sverdlovsk organization of the Union of Artists of the USSR, headed the evening school of graphic artists at the Union, and directed the art studio at the District Officers House. He was engaged in social activities: in 1950-1960 he was elected to the Sverdlovsk City Committee of the CPSU and to the Regional Council of People's Deputies. In 1981, Ionin retired, and retaining creative energy, continued exhibition activities and participated in the life of the Union of Artists.
He died on August 26, 1987 in Sverdlovsk, was buried at the city’s Shirokorechensky cemetery .
He was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and the Badge of Honor, as well as medals. The works of D. M. Ionin are in the Yekaterinburg Art Gallery, Perm Art Gallery, Nizhny Tagil Museum of Fine Arts and in private collections.
In 2016, in the Small Hall of the Sverdlovsk Regional Branch of the Union of Artists of Russia, the exhibition "On the 100th anniversary of David Markovich Ionin" was held [3] .
