History of the Square
The area is located at the place of the Clichy outpost - the customs gate of the Wall of general purchasers , built to levy duties on imported goods. The building of the outpost was made in the Empire style and looked like an elegant pavilion. It stood until 1860.
When in 1814 the Russian and allied forces approached Paris , almost the most intense events of the assault on the city unfolded at the Clichy outpost [1] [2] . Here the defense was led by Marshal Monsay , a veteran famous for his impeccable honesty. Under his command, not only soldiers fought, but also national guards, led by Colonel Jean-Baptiste Claude Odio , the founder of the jewelry house still existing. Despite the superiority in the number of troops, the attackers did not advance a single step here. Odio later commissioned the artist Oras Verne a large painting dedicated to the defense of Clichy's outpost, in which the artist depicted him on foot next to equestrian Marshal Monsey.
Despite the fact that Paris was taken, the actions of Monsay made a great impression on the French. His reputation was further strengthened when, after returning to the throne of the Bourbon dynasty, Monsay voted in the House of Peers against the death penalty for Napoleon's loyal supporter, Marshal Ney , for which he was even briefly imprisoned.
As a result, the modern Place Clichy is decorated with a monument dedicated to Marshal Monsey, created in 1864 by the sculptor Dulemar and architect Guillaume.
In the late XIX - early XX centuries, the square, due to its proximity to Montmartre , repeatedly fell on the canvases of the Impressionists - in particular, Paul Signac and Edouard Manet .
Modernity
In the square there is the metro station Place de Clichy (lines 2 and 13), stops of seven bus routes and four night bus routes, as well as a taxi rank. In 2008-2010, the area was landscaped, a pedestrian zone and bike paths appeared, new trees were planted.
