Biography

In 1954, he graduated from the Moscow Art College in memory of 1905. The student of professor V.A. Shestakov - the main theater artist V. Meyerhold.

Alexander Abramovich designed more than one hundred performances at the Moscow Regional Drama Theater, Moscow Theater. Moscow City Council, Moscow Theater. Gogol, Kiev Opera House. And also in the theaters of Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, France and others. The directors A. Bomshtein worked with are G. Tovstonogov, R. Viktyuk, B. Pokrovsky and others A.A. In his creative work, Bomshtein continued the traditions of the Russian theater and decoration school, a characteristic feature of which was immersion in drama and music performances. The highest fine culture, deep knowledge of the material made his theatrical works independent works of art.

Selected works of A. Bomstein are the property of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, are stored in museum collections around the world, as well as in the State Museum of Fine Arts. A.S. Pushkin, State Literary Museum, Theater Museum. A. Bakhrushin and in private collections.

One of the most respected collections in this series is the theater collection of the Yusupovs, the largest collection of Russian theatrical and decorative art. The collection includes the works of K. Korovin, I. Bilibin, A. Bomshtein, N. Roerich, N. Goncharova and others. In 2015, the Yusupov Foundation IRFĒ published a luxurious catalog of Russian Plots. [1] Along with the scenography by I. Bilibin, N. Roerich and others, the scenographic masterpieces by A. A. Bomshtein were also published in it: sketches of the scenery for the opera by N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov’s “The Tsar’s Bride” (1954), costumes for A. Kasyanov’s opera “Stepan Razin” (1954), costumes for S. Prokofiev’s ballet “Tsar Boris” (1970s)

However, the creative range of A. Bomstein was not limited to theatrical sketches. In addition to scenography, Alexander Bomstein created landscapes: rural, urban, industrial; portraits, and also invented his own unique fantastic worlds.

A large place in the work of A. Bomshtein was occupied by the theme of myth and religion. A. Bomshtein is the author of original iconography. The legacy of A. Bomshtein includes, among other things, iconic portraits of Russian historical figures - metropolitans and sovereigns, historical sketches based on the Russian Middle Ages, imaginary author's antiquity. The image of the gloomy Russian Middle Ages is a style leitmotif here.

His best works exactly match the style and genre of the play ... and at the same time they are independent works of art” .  [2] 
Exhibitions

Bomshtein A.A. participant of numerous theater festivals and art exhibitions. In 1977, 1979, in 1981, large solo exhibitions were held by A. Bomshtein under the patronage of the Moscow City Council culture department. And the painting "Mother Tree" in 1976 received the Grand Prix of the International Theater Festival in Venice (1992). The last (posthumous) exhibition "Alexander Bomshtein. The creative path of the master" was successfully held at the Moscow House of Nationalities in 2012 .

Interesting fact.

The national biographical directory included the artist Alexander Bomstein in the list of celebrities born on November 22 (along with Vladimir Dahl, General de Gaulle and others).
